    Generally two species can be distinguished (cf. Marzell 2000,1,636ff.): 1) B. napus var. arvensis (Lam.) Thellung, the seeds of which are used for oil production. Cf. the G names Raps, Reps, etc., which are short forms of North German rapsad and Upper German rapsaat or ModE rape seed (= L SEMEN RAPICIUM 'coleseed, Rübsamen'). This is most likely the species referred to in the LB 2) B. napus var. napobrassica (L.) Rchb.; Swedish Turnip; Kohl-Rübe; this species was not introduced before the 18th century (cf. Banham 1990, 201).
