  • Comment on (A): Sambucus nigra L., elder, Schwarzer Holunder

Grattan / Singer translate 107/1 ellenes spryttinge wrongly with 'helenium shoots' (helenium = Inula helenium L.); in 181/15 they interprete ellenrind inneweard (= probably 'pith, Holundermark') as 'the inside of helenium bark'; Grattan / Singer confuse ellen with →eolone but in 119/1f. they correctly translate ellenrinde neoþewearde with 'elder-bark, the lower part'.

The SAMSUCHON of the HA denotes Origanum majorana L., marjoram, Majoran; cf.cyninges-wyrt and D'Aronco (1998,58), Arsdall (2002,214).
