    Recorded in the DOE, s.v. fūl adj., 1.d.ii. Compare Epinal-Erfurt 35: ALNUS alaer and ALNUS aler to Epinal-Erfurt 36: Epinal-Erfurt 36: ALNEUM fulaetrea and ALNEUM falatreu (Pheifer 1974,5): this indicates that L ALNEUM does not denote Alnus glutinosus Gaertner (= →alor) but, as the literal meaning of the OE plant name suggests F. alnus (The name fūlabēam relates to the foul smell of the tree's bark.). Based on place name evidence Hough (2003,57f.) sees A. glutinosus ("black alder") at least as an equally possible identification.
