Recorded in the DOE, s.v. fūl adj., 1.d.ii. Compare Epinal-Erfurt 35: ALNUS alaer and ALNUS aler to Epinal-Erfurt 36 (Pheifer 1974,5): this indicates that L ALNEUM does not denote Alnus glutinosus Gaertner (= →alor) but, as the literal meaning of the OE plant name suggests F. alnus. Based on place name evidence Hough (2003,57f.) sees A. glutinosus ("black alder") at least as an equally possible identification.
