  • Comment on (A): Gentiana L., gentian, a species of ~, Enzian, eine Art von ~

Cf. Hunger (1935,167) and the note to Laud 165.[1]

On LOCUSTIS cf. the context: "ET PREBUERUNT SATIATA MELLA CUM LOCUSTIS PASTUM CUI IOHANNI"; "7 gearcodan gefylde huni mid feldwyrtum fodan"; Gneuss notes: "Vp2 feldwyrtum ('Enzian'): D gærstapum. Die Fehlübersetzung in Vp schwer zu erklären; vgl. J. van Zandt Cortelyou [...] S. 80ff." In my opinion the translator did not think about 'gentian' but feldwyrtum simply is an 'educated guess' based on the context to render the unknown LOCUSTIS; it can be read as 'herbs of the field, Feldkräuter'. On the equation of UERBASCUM feldwyrt (HA LXXIII, 30/13) cf. →felt-wyrt.
