  • Comment on (A): Verbascum thapsus L., great mullein, Kleinblütige Königskerze

Cf. Hunger ch. LXXIV: VERBASCUM = V. thapsus. I cannot support Stracke's assumption (1974,74) "AUANDONIA is unexplained, but it must be some sort of gentian, since feldwyrt also glosses it at D 50 (AUADONIA)" because AUADONIA is related to L AUEDONE, which denotes a Verbascum species.[1] Feldwyrt is a frequent variant of feltwyrt, lit. 'feltwort, Filzkraut'; cf. Cockayne 1951,II,383: "Feltwyrt [...] The reading feldwyrt is a mistake, the felty leaves give it the name, whence it is also called in German Wollkraut; mullein is also supposed to be woollen." Other NHG names are Kerzwoll, Mannwoll, Wollblumen, etc. (Pritzel / Jessen 1967,429f.); ModE vernacular names are 'Adam's Flannel, Our Lord's Flannel' ( cf. Britten / Holland 1886, s.v. VERBASCUM THAPSUS). Therefore Banham's suggestion (2002,98a) that mullein substitutes gentian, which she bases on the similarities of the plant's names, is hardly likely.
