    The identification is based on the assumption that ferdwyrt is a writing error for feldwyrt (cf. DOE, s.v.). The name 'field wort' is too general to be the primary name of a plant: it might be a folk etymological formation of *felwyrt (cf. ModE felwort, Britten / Holland 1886,178), formed from L FEL ('gall, Galle') and OE wyrt. Cf. →eorþ-gealla which is a loan translation of FEL TERRAE.
