  • Comment on (A): Helleborus niger L., christmas rose, Christrose

Cockayne (1962,II,375) and BT, ClH, s.v. provide this meaning as secure identification without further comment. The meaing of the plant name is secured by ceaster-, which does no occur in other plant names. A formation of →ceaster-æsc to ceasterwyrt is likely as H. niger is not a tree (cf. →æsc (1)) but a herb and the name -æsc could have been regarded as irrtating. The possibility that ceasterwyrt denotes other plants than H. niger is equally possible, cf. →ceaster-æsc.

The Dresden gloss HELLEBORUS setrewort (Manitius 1901,434) is not a corrupted ceasterwyrt but belongs to OHG sittirwurz, suterwrz, and MHG zitterwrze (cf. Marzell 2000,2,800f.); also cf. ModE setter-grass, setterwort (Britten/Holland 1886,424).
