    L CAPPARIS (= Gk καππάρίς) denotes Capparis spinosa L., caper, Gemeine Kaper (cf. Dioskorides II,204; Berendes 1902,249f), a mediterranean plant; the translation 'wudubend' most likely is an error and probably goes back to a confusion with L CAPRIFOLIUM (L. periclymenum); cf. Dur 93: CAPRIFOLIUM vudebinde, and for other attempts at identification Dur 209 (LIGNARIUM vudebinde), Dur 335 (VIBURNA vudebinda), Laud 541 (EDERA NIGRA. I. eord iuig.UEL CRISOCANTES. i . iuig.UEL wudebende) and the respective notes. D'Aronco (1989,58) and Van Arsdall (2002,223) use Capparis spinosa L. as most likely identification for the HA.

    The variety of the glosses most likely is the result of a mix-up of at least three different Germanic names: 1. ∗widu-(wudu-)windō 'tree, wood bindweed; Baum-, Holzwinde' and ∗widu-(wudu-) bindō 'forest bindweed, Wald-Binde' which is L. Periclymenum or a similar plant. 2. Cf. our comment on meaning B.

    LIGNARIUM: Cf. s.v. →āl-geweorc. The erroneous gloss might go back to a wrong association with L LIGNUM or LIGARE. A confusion with LIGUSTRUM, Lonicera periclymenum. (cf. →hunig-sūge) is possible. CAPRIFOLIUM = L. periclymenum (cf. Marzell 2000,2,1374); HEDERA = Hedera helix L., ivy, Efeu (cf. s.v. →īfig); Pettit (2001, glossary) suggests this as possible identification; HEDERA NIGRA = Glechoma hederaceum L. (cf. s.v. →eorþ-īfig); VIBURNUM (cf. André 1985, s.v.) = Viburnum lantana L., way-faring-tree, Schneeball, (cf. the G names Schlingbaum, Windbaum, Pritzel / Jessen 1967,434f; this plant, like L. periclymenum is a Caprifoliaceae). VITICELLA (cf. André 1985, s.v.) = Bryonia dioica Jacqu., which also is a climber.

    The G name is Wedewinde (cf. Marzell 2000,1,1138); INUOLUCRUM (cf. André 1985, s.v.) = Cuscuta epithymum Murray, lesser dodder, Klee-Seide; cf. AhdGl 3,538,52: CUSCUTA PODAGRA wenge widewinde; this plan, like Conv. arvensis, is a Convolvulaceae.

    Based on its ModE name 'woodbine' Hankins (1992,83) suggests G. sempervirens as another possible identification but unfortunately this plant is only native to warm temperate and tropical America from Guatemala north to the Southeastern United States (cf. Zander 2008, s.v).
