  • Comment on (A): Hedera heilix L., ivy, Gewöhnlicher Efeu

Cf. Stracke, n.374: "For CAMIMELOS and CANNULEA, take CAMELEON, which is in Latin glossaries an equivalent of HEDERA NIGRA". Cf. CGL 3,544,30: CAMILIA HEDERA NIGRA; 588,17: CAMILINCTUS HEDERA NIGRA; 609,10: CAMILIUNTUS IDEST EDERA NIGRA; 631, n.5: CAMELEON SIUE CAMILEONTIS IDEST EDERA NIGRA. The glosses seem to go back to a confusion with Gk χαμαικσσος, lat HEDERA TERRESTRIS, which is a synonym of HEDERA NIGRA. Cf. the Gk form in , e.g. CGL 3,558, 26: CAMECISTON HEDERA TERRANEA (cf. →eorþ-crop).

The generally accepted translation of HEDERA NIGRA is H. heilix L. (cf. André 1985, s.v.), also cf. D'Aronco (1998,55) and the DOE, s.v.

  • Comment on (B): ? Glechoma hederaceum L., ground-ivy, Gewöhnlicher Gundermann

Hunger (1935,168): ch. CI: HEDERA NIGRA = G. hederaceum; but cf. Laud 374 and 541 and the respective notes. The generally accepted translation of HEDERA NIGRA is H. heilix L. (cf. André 1985, s.v.). L TEREBINTUS = Pistacia terebinthus L., terebinth, Terpentinpistazie, Terpentinbaum; in my opinion the gloss is a 'guess' made by the glossator based on the following context: "QUASI TEREBINTUS E X T E N D I RAMOS MEOS" therefore 'ivy' and a wrong identification of TERE- as TERRAE.

Lit. 'earth-ivy, Erdefeu' (cf. the NHG names Erdefeu, Grundefeu for G. hederaceum, Hegi 1906,V,2373), probably a loan translation of L HEDERA TERRESTRIS (= G. hederaceum, cf. Fischer 2001,270). The name refers to the creeping stem of the plant and also the leaves, which slightly resemble ivy leaves. (Hegi 1906,V,2373.)
