Old-English: vetervyrt, wæterwyrt, wetterwvrt,
Latin (Machine generated): CALISTRICUS UEL CALITRICEM, CALITRICE, GALLITRICIUM, GALLITRICUM, GALLITRICUS,
↑ topCf. Laud 716 (GALLITRICUS. I. wetterwyrt) and the respective note: "The plant named is the Callitriche or Water Star-wort", similar Cockayne (1962,I,153). But CALLITRICHON is not an old name of this plant (cf. André, s.v., and Marzell 2000,1,728). D'Aronco (1998,52) has a wrong reference to Bierbaumer (1976,124), who does not specify any Callitriche species.
According to André (1985, s.v.) CALLITRICHON (-UM) denotes Adiantum capillus-veneris L., maidenhair, Frauenhaar, or Asplenium trichomanes L., both ferns which have several names in common (cf. Marzell 2000,I,118; D'Aronco 1998,52; Van Arsdall 2002,171). A. capillus-veneris is a Mediterranean plant and the name 'water wort, Wasserkraut' does not suit the habitat at all therefore the meaning A. trichomanes seems to be more plausibel. The names waterwort (ModE, Britten / Holland, s.v.) and Wasserkraut (G) refer to the medical use of the plant against dropsy (cf. Marzell 2000,I ,491). The use against hair loss in HA (Gif mannes fex fealle) suits both plants because according to the doctrion of signatures the hair like ferns would be perfectly suited to cure this ailment (cf. Marzell 2000,I,491).
