The gloss belongs to Is. 17,6,17: SURCULI A PRAECISIONE SERRAE NUNCUPATI. Cf. Meritt (1954,118): "the gloss is not directly influenced by Isidore's statement that SURCULI are so called from the cutting of the saw. Indirectly, however, the information that SURCULI get their name from being cut off with a saw, may have led a glossator to think of suckers, which have long been called watershoots and waterboughs, e.g., yf water bowes and super-fluyte ben pared of, the tree bereth the beter and more fruyte [OED, s.v. waterbouoh, 1398]". Meritt's interpretation 'superfluous shoots' is supported by the gloss AntK 144,15 (WW 149,27) GERMEN berende boh on the same folio.
