  • Comment on (A): Apium graveolens L., wild celery, Echter Sellerie

Myrce is not recorded as a plant name in BT(SC), CH(S); on the identification cf. Hunger (1935,168): CXX: APIUM = Apium sp. The L lemmata MENTAM (→minte) and MERCURIALIS (→cedelc) do not fit A. graveolens. Some medical texts differentiate between the wild growing species →wudu-merce and a cultivated variety, although there is no conclusive archeological evidence for cultivation of this plant (cf. Banham 1990,222-226).

Etymology: according to Holthausen (1974, s.v. merece [sic!]) related to mere 'sea, Meer'referring to the plants habitat: "Als wildwachsende Pflanze zerstreut an salzhaltigen Stellen (vorzugsweise am Meeresstrand), auf Wiesen, in Sümpfen, an Ufern, Gräben [...]" (Hegi, V,1143).
