    Pettit (2001,LXIII,238) notes that this plant name might be related to the meargealla of the LB (cf. →mersc-mear-gealla).

    Etymology: cf. Grattan / Singer (1951,216): "In the main text there is a single instance of the eAngl. æ by smoothing [...] and also one instance of the later Angl. e-form of this vowel: mergelle (<∗maerh- <∗mæorh-) 147a". Because this plant name's etymology is far from secured this statement has to be treated accordingly.
