    Etymology: For hāre- cf. →hāran-sprecel and →hāre-wyrt. Also cf. the plant description (Hegi 1906,V,2395): "Stengel [...] wie die Laubblätter lockerflaumig, in der Jugend spinnwebartig weiß behaart." A ME record shows the connection to the OE plant name hārewyrt (Filago vulgaris Lam., common cudweed, Deutsches Filzkraut): "Filago is [...] lyk in colour to horhounne" (Brodin 1950,159).

    -hūne: Cf. Holthausen (1974, s.v.): "hūne f. 'Andorn', ne. hoar-, hore-hound, zu hūn 1 ?" Holthausen (1974, s.v.): "hūn m. 1. junger Bär', in Pn., as. ahd. ~ ds., z.B. Hūnbald, ais. hūn-n 'Klotz, Würfel, Mastknopf, junges Tier'". The analogy with young animals (mostly small, round, furry balls) refers to the dense florescense (cf. Hegi 1906,V,2395). Another explanation is based on OIS hūn-n 'crow's nest, Mastkorb' and OE hūn-þy̅rel 'hole in the mast point, through which the the great mars-fall runs, Loch in der Mastspitze, durch das das große Marsfall läuft' (cf. De Vries 2000,267): the florescence tops a long stalk and does resemble a crow's nest on a ship's mast.
