    This identification is based on ModE 'hoarwort, horewort' (cf. Britten / Holland 1886,261), which was used very early to denote F. vulgaris; cf. Biggam (1998,210f.), who supports our argumentation.

    BT (s.v. haran-wyrt) and Cockayne (1961,III,330) wrongly relate the plant name to hara 'hare, Hase'; also cf. →hāran-sprecel.

Cont.: nim þa haranwyrt, cnua wel; Cockayne (1961, II,156) assumes a missing word after þa because he interpretes haranwyrt not as hāran wyrt "the whitely wort, die weißliche Wurz", but as haranwyrt (with a short -a-) "hare-wort, Hasenwurz". Leonhardi (1905,67, note 1) follows Cockayne"s argumentation. But the forms sio hare wyrt and harewyrt, where hāre can only be an adjective, are proof against this interpretation.
