  • Comment on (A): Vaccinium myrtillus L., bilberry, Blaubeere

Cf. Marzell (2000,5,202). OE →hǣþ was used to denote several moorland plants, V. myrtillus is one of those plants having berries as fruits. Wisan, (→wīse) is evidence that hæþbergean denotes the whole plant and not only the fruit.

  • Comment on (B): Empetrum nigrum L., crowberry, Krähenbeere

Cf. OED s.v. 'heathberry' and Marzell (2000,5,202). OE →hǣþ was used to denote several moorland plants, E. nigrum is one plant having berries as fruits. Both plants are not native to the Mediterranean and therefore not part of the ancient Materia Medica.
