    On the lemma: Hilbelink indicates a short vowel: cf. s.v. giþ; long vowel s.v. rife in gy̅þrife (→giþ-rife); Förster (1917,134) has gy̅þ-corn (→gīþ-corn); also cf. →lyb-corn. Since the relation to L GITH(AGO) is the only explanation of the first part of the compound, a short vowel is more plausible.

    On HERBA MUNDA cf. Förster (1974, note on 134/213): "vielleicht ist [...] HERBA MUNDATORIA 'pur­gierendes kraut' zu lesen." MAGDALIS seems to be a corrupted AMYGDALOIDES, which in the L HA (HS 109,16) is synonymous with TITIMALLVS; it denotes different Euphorbia species.

    Etymology: According to Holthausen (1974, s.v. giþ) the form is related to →giþ-rife, 'Agrostemma githago L., corncockle, Gewöhnliche Kornrade, which itself relates to L GITH, GITHAGO (cf. Marzell 2000,I,153). I see no connection between E. lathyris and A. githago.

    Cf. Laud 366 (CITICOTIA.I.LACTER. UEL gutcorn) and the respective note.[1] In the L HA, Ch. CXIII HERBA LATERIDA denotes the Mediterranean Daphne gnidium L. (cf. Hunger 1935,168 and André s.v. THYMELAEA).[2]
