    Cf. the ModE names: Britten / Holland (1886,603): "witch hazel, quick-beam, quicken, whicken, wicken or wicken tree." Also cf. OE →wīce; in the glosses cwicbēam and wīce are synonymous (WW 200/20f; 362/16). Pettit (2001,1, glossary) also suggests 'Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz, wild service tree, Elsbeere'.

    'Populus tremula L., aspen, Espe' the identification provided by BT, s.v., Cockayne (1962,III,321), and Hankins (1992,223) has at least to be ruled out for the LB as cwicbeam und →æsp occur together twice (27/10;35/34).

    L CARISCUS is not clear but cf. the following explanatory attempts: OED (s.v. quickbeam) = TAMARISCUS; Wynn (1961,376): = gr. μαρύισμος 'small nut'. Pheifers suggestion is the most plausibe: "it could be related to [...] CARICA 'Fig', in which case cuic­beam 'mountain ash' (ModE. quicken) might be a mistake for ficbeam". This explanation is supported by the gloss Dur 98 CARISCUS ficbeam (which again Lindheim explains as a corruption of cwic-bēam).

    Also cf. OE →wīce; in the glosses cwicbēam and wīce are synonymous (WW 200/20f; 362/16).

    Identification based on L IUNIPERUM; as a gloss to IUNIPERUM it is probably a confusion with a word form related to G Queckolter.[1]
