On COLOR cf. Stryker's note: "OE ac 'oak' is a strange gloss for COLOR. Perhaps, as Lindsay suggests [...] COLOR was glossed RUBOR, which was then mistaken for ROBUR and glossed ac." Also cf. Pheifer (1974,n.235) and Wynn (1961,392). Storms (1946, Glossary), and Olds (1985,170) equate āc with Quercus robur L. but we have not enough evidence to be certain which species of oak was really used. Native to Britain are Quercus robur L., pedunculate oak, Stieleiche, and Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl., sessile oak, Traubeneiche (cf. Stace 1997,120f.).
