Cf. Wynn (1961,616): "SISCA ... ? Some kind of sedge, possibly a latinisation of OIe seisg sedge." The literal meaning 'cut-straw, Schnittstroh' (cf. OE snīþan 'schneiden') would suit a sedge species better than a thistle species. Cf. Brown (1969,II,800) on a possible celtic origin.
