N.: "I cannot trace this form in English. It seems to be a Latin gloss of the Latin, but I canaot trace it in Latin either."
The L lemma probably is the first part of PURPUREAE UIOLAE; cf. the subsequent gloss PURPUREAE UIOLAE heseluert; the gloss could best be compared to the L name POMEROLA (C 71.2, Dc 185,f.27a), which Varnhagen (p.8) explains as "eine Deminutivbildung zu lat. POMA für POMUM". On the possible relationship of VIOLA - 'apple, Apfel' cf. the unsolved gloss DE VIOLIS appellef (s.v. →æppel-lēaf); another explanation for the connection to 'apple' could be constructed on the confusion of Cyclamen purpurascens Mill.; cyclamen; Alpenveilchen (→eorþ-æppel) with A. europaeum (cf. Marzell 2000,1,1288).
