    Cf. BT (s.v.), Britten / Holland (1886,6)[1] and NED, s.v. Adderwort. Lindheim (1941,31,n.54), in contrast has: "Die genaue Bestimmung der 'Natterwurz' stößt wegen der ausgedehnten Verbreitung dieses Namens auf Schwierigkeiten. Der Verfasser des Herbariums führt allein 6 verschiedene Namen an." See also: Laud 224 and Laud 1503 and the respective notes.

    Cf. Hunger (1935,168): CXXX: BASILICA = Ocimum basilicum; also cf. Hunger (1935,160): NOMEN HERBAE BASILISCA. ITALI REGIA DICUNT. Gk βασιλικός = lat. REGIUS 'royal'; The restriction on the ancient ώκιμον probably occurred in the late antiquity or the early mediaeval period. It is likely that the OE name nædderwyrt in HA CXXXI was chosen only because of its legend (cf. note on HA 242/8f).
