  • Comment on (A): Trifolium arvense L., hare's foot clover, Hasen-Klee

Cf. Hunger (1935,167): LXIII: LEPORIS PES = T. arvense. On -hīge cf. Krogmann (1939,71): "Für die besondere Bedeutung von hīge ist vor allem nhd. Lauf zu vergleichen, das ebenfalls den Fuß des Hasen bezeichnet."

Etymology: Cf. Lindheim's note on Dur 218: "Die ae. Glosse haran-hig ist laut AEEW unbekannter Herkunft. Man könnte an ae. hī(e)g 'Heu' denken (vgl. nhd. Hasengras). Doch scheint mir die Vermutung Cockaynes (II 390) auch beachtenswert, der den Ausdruck mit ae. higian, ne. hie 'eilen' zusammenbringt." Because of the scraggy ears of T. pratense the OE name could have originated independently from the L name LEPORIS PES although a coincidence like this is highly unlikely. But we can assume the derivation of an abstract form ⁺hīge 'swift locomotion, running, schnelle Fortbewegung, Lauf' from e.g. hīgian 'haste, eilen' to a concrete noun 'running (limb); Lauf(glied)'; a similar process can be found in German or even in ME where hīe 'haste, Eile' is derived from hīen (=OE hīgian) 'to haste, eilen' (cf. MED s.v.v.). Our name would perfectly match the NHG name 'Hasenlauf'.
