The identification is based on the context in the LB 18/28: Eft genim clifwyrt, sume men hataþ foxesclife, sume eawyrt; cf. →clif-wyrt and →foxes clīfe. The reference to water, 'water-wort, Wasserwurz' can only refer to the moist habitat, which the plant prefers (cf. Hegi 1906,VI,628). Petitt (2001,CLXXV,1007) refutes the identification but provides no alternative meaning: "no variety found in Britain has any particular association with water." The DOE provides no identification at all.
