Cf. LA 184/13: lib 'medicine, drug; Medizin, Heilmittel'. The occurences, where a gpl is recorded, refer to the fruits of the plant which were common laxatives (4-8 corns cause vomiting, dysentry along with abdominal pain; cf. Hegi 1906,V,147); in the recipes the quantitiy is minutely recorded: the numbers of seed corns range between 15 and 100. Either the name refers to purgative fruits of other plants too (Cocayne also suggests seeds of gourd; 1961,II,397) or possibly the remedies were prepared ahead? CITOCATIA cf. s.v. →giþ-corn. The L lemmata CARTAMO, CARTAMUS, CARTOMO are hardly identical with Gk κάρδαμον 'nasturtium' as suggested by Pheifer (cf. 1974,n.279) but with CARTAMUS, Carthamus tinctorius L., dyer's saffron, Färgber-Saflor (Marzell 2000,1,855).[1] The gloss need not be based on the purgative effect of the plant but could also result in a confusion with CATHARTICUS or a similar plant name.

Etymology: cf. Lindheim's note on Dur 104: "Ae. lybb 'Gift, Zauber, Lab' stellt sich zu ne. lib, as. lubbi, ahd. luppi, got. lubja-, aisl. lyf 'Heilkraut'." Also cf. the numerous compounds with OE lyb(b) collected by Jente (1921,302ff).

  • Comment on (B): ? Ricini fructus, castor oil plant, seed of the ~, Rizinusbaum, Frucht des ~

Grattan / Singer's identification (1952,117), who relate the passage in LA to Dioscorides. Bonser (1963,303) prefers it over Cockayne's suggestion (1961,II,397); also cf. Hagen (1995,184); Pettit (2001,II, XLIII,179) refutes it. The question concerning the quantity of the ingredient also applies here: these seeds are highly toxic even in small quantities (cf. Grieve, s.v. castor-oil plant).
