  • Comment on (A): Galium aparine L., cleavers, Kletten-Labkraut

In the Middle Ages G. aparine was regarded as a Lappa species: "Galium aparine L. mittelalt. [...] LAPPA CANINA [...] Kleberkraut [...] kleine Klette. (Pritzel 1882,158). The carpidia are much smaller than the barbed heads of A. lappa, therefore 'small burr'. The bristles are hardly to be seen with the naked eye, which creates the impression of the plant sticking to textiles or fur, which is the basis for the G name 'Klebkraut'.
