    Most likely this plant name denotes Silybum marianum (L.) Gärtn., milk thistle, Gewöhnliche Mariendistel (cf. Björkman (1902,283), and Fischer (2001,284): Silybum Marianum: "ERINGIUM, 'CARDO FOLIA HABET LATA' (Gloss., Cod.Vat.Pal.1259)"); also cf. →smæl-þistel and →þistel, unbrad.

    Because of the gloss AhdGl 3,542,37 LA­BRUM VENERIS breitdistele (13.Jh.) an identifcation with Dipsacus fullonum L., fuller's teasel, Wilde Karde could also be possible (also cf. André 1985, s.v. LABRUM VENERIS); although for the OE vocabulary this is not very likely as the plant is well accounted for by the names →wulfes-camb, and →wulfes-tǣsel.

I clearly read bradþistel; also cf. Junius 77,212 ERINGIUS bradþistel. So Meritt"s note "Read brad þistle" has to be corrected to brad þistel.

Probably ERINGIUS "thistle, Distel" and not ERICIUS "hedgehog, Igel" as suggested by Lindheim (1941,n.160).
