Cf. Förster (1917,136); cf. Hunger (1935,167): XXVI: CAMELA = D. fullonum. HA 25 records the names DIPSACA, ONOCARDION and LABRUM VENERIS which all denote D. fullonum and which all are synonyms of CAMELLEA (cf. André 1956, s.v.); according to André CAMELLA was coined from CHAMELAEA (Gk χαμελαία), which normally denotes Daphne species and which became a name for thistle species because of a confusion with CHAMAELEON (Gk χαμαιλέων).

Etymology: lit. 'wolf's comb, Wolfskamm'; Förster (1917,136) compares the plant name to OE →wulfes-tǣsel (= D. fullonum), which is related to OHG zeisala, a plant name that mainly denotes fuller's teasle (cf. Björkman 1902,231), which was used to losen up wool or finish wollen fabric (= OHG zeisan). The relation to wolf Marzell (cf. 2000,II,147) describes rather poetically, and notes that the 'crooked hooks of the wild plant comb the running wolf'. But rather it is a loan translation of L PECTEN LUPI: cf. Dur 270: PENTILUPI vulues comb. Lindheim's note: "Das Lemma muß wohl in PECTEN LUPI geändert warden." Also cf. FR peigne de loup.
