On L STAMINE (from L STAMEN 'thread, Faden') cf. Napier (1900, note on 1,3728): "In 7,266 æfredan glosses STAMINE [...] I take it to be a sb., the 1st part of which is æf 'off', and the 2nd reda (= hreda) conn. with hreddan, the meaning of the compound being 'that which is taken away f. or separated off.' It therefore suits PUTAMINE better than STAMINE." For another etymological explanation see BTS, s.v. æfreda. Compare the context in Ald. 287,14f.: CUM DE STUPPAE STAMINE VEL POTIUS PUTAMINE [...] ORDIRETUR. In this MS PUTAMINE is glossed with of hniglan (Na 7,267), therefore æfredan seems to be intended a gloss for STUPPAE ('oakum, Werg').
