  • Comment on (A): -, herbal drink, Kräutertrank

ANTIDOTUM = 'antidote, Gegengift'; CATHARTICUM, PURGATORIUM = 'purgative, Purgiermittel'; PICRA (to PICRIS 'bitter-wort, Bitterkraut') = 'a medicine made from aloe, eine Arznei aus Aloë'; a compound biterwyrtdrenc (cf. ClH) is hardly realistic. THERIACA = 'medicine against snake bite; Arzneimittel gegen Schlangenbiß'. Deegan notes (1988,236): "This is a purging medicine which may be given by mouth or as an enema. Wyrtdrenc glosses CATATICA I PUGATORIA, 'cathartic and purgative' in AElfric's glossary [WW2,114.30]."

Ald. 243,9: SI TIRIACA VEL ANTIDOTA.

[2]:

Cont.: be þam suþernan wyrt eceddrence; Cockayne correctly reads wyrteced-drence.

[3]:

Cont.: mid smeþre on dounge wyrtdrences; es muß wohl heißen mid ondounge smeþes wyrtdrences; cf. 79/10: mid smeþe wyrtdrence.

[4]:

Cf. note on 79/20.

[5]:

The content reads gif þe wyrtdrenc ne limpe, sele strangne; but both a comparison with LB 79/10 (mid smeþe wyrtdrence) and the meaning of the sentence itself suggest we should read: gif smeþe wyrtdrenc ne limpe, sele strangne.
