  • Comment on (A): Cicuta virosa L., cowbane, Giftiger Wasserschierling

The name literally means 'rage-whistele, mad-whistle' and the determinans refers to the symptoms shown by people poisoned by this plant (spasms, raging, screaming); the determinatum indicates that the hollow stems of the plant could have been used in whistle production. Cf. Marzell (2000,I,1001): "wodevvspele 'DE CICUTA', wedewesle 'CICUTE' (nd. des 13.Jh.s), [...] And. wedewesle entspricht ags. wōdewistle. Zu ags. hwistle 'Pfeifen bzw. mhd. wispeln 'pfeifen'". The gloss to ELLEBORUM (= Veratrum album L.) has to be a confusion with →wēde-berie, because the reference to 'whistle' does not go with this plant.
