  • Comment on (A): Geum urbanum L., wood avens, Echte Nelkenwurz

The plant name is not recorded in BT(SC), CH(S), HEW, and the DOE. Grattan and Singer (1952,123) translate 'bennet' (i.e. the old name 'herb bennet' for 'wood avens' = Geum urbanum L.) without further comment.[1] The L BENEDICTA most frequently denotes Geum urbanum L. (cf. Fischer 2001,270; Fischer-Benzon 1998,198; Lindheim 1942, n. 59) but is also used as name for other plants: Cnicus benedictus L., blessed thistle, Benediktenkraut; Conium maculatum L., hemlock, Gefleckter Schierling (also cf. MED, s.v. benet; Storms 1948,320; André 1985, s.v.; and Laud 37, 462, 662, 683).
