  • Comment on (A): Hyoscyamus niger L., henbane, Schwarzes Bilsenkraut

Apart from the dubious OTA only BULBUS does not match belene.[1] CAULICULARIS = CALICULARIS; cf. Is, 17,941: HYOSCYAMOS A GRAECIS DICTA, A LATINIS HERBA CALICULARIS. ALTERCUM, according to André (1985, s.v.), is the L name for Hyoscyamus L. and especially Hyosciamus niger, which is also denoted by L (HERBA) SYMPHONIACA.

[1]:

BULBUS probably comes from the gloss Dur 73: BULBI SCILLICI gledere (cf. s.v. glædene).

[2]:

Cf. note: "Das zweite Lemma OTA ist mir unverständlich. Vielleicht ist nur eine andere Endung damit gemeint (Für -OTA lies -ACA?)." (I cannot explain the second lemma OTA. Maybe it only indicates another ending (for -OTA read -ATA)?)

[4]:

Grattan and Singer (1952,111) translate "henbanes", but the number of plant names in the singular in this recipe suggest an "asg" here.
