  • Comment on (A): Lithospermum officinale L., common gromwell, Echter Steinsame

The source is Dioskorides III,158, where L. officinale is described (Berendes 1902,355). Sunnancorn is a loan translation of L GRANUM SOLIS; cf. Marzell (2000,II,1345): "sunnencorn (13.Jh.) 'GRANA SOLIS, MILIUM SOLIS' ahd.Gl. 3,541,65 [...] Verderbt (bzw. verschrieben) sunnenhorn (14. Jh.) 'GRANA SOLIS' ebd. 3,529, 44." L MILIUM SOLIS = 'sun millet, Sonnenhirse'; 'sun-, Sonnen-' refers to the plants shiny white seeds (cf. Marzell, ibid.).
