    L FABA = 'bean, Bohne'. V. faba is the only bean species used in Anglo-Saxon times (cf. Banham 1990,172-182).

    The OED, s.v. bean (4) does not have any references for this meaning prior to 1398. Grattan and Singer (1952,177,n.8) state: "[...] and it should be noted that the wider meanings of 'bean', such as 'seed', 'fruit', 'berry', are not recorded until centuries later."

    But similar to →æppel (2) bēan can denote any bean shaped fruit or larger seed (cf. DOE, s.v., and Pollington 2000,100). Glosses provide plenty evidence for this use, cf. for example: Cp 481: CICER bean (CICER = 'Cicer arietinum L., chickpea, Kichererbse'); ClSt L 185 LEGUMEN bean; Dur 117: CICER sum bean-cynn. Also cf. the much discussed occurrence LA 176/19, pysbeana s.v. →pise.
