The term refers to the hard seeds of the plant Lithospermon, which again is named after this characteristic (lit. 'stone-seed, Steinsamen'); cf. Dioscorides III,158 (Berendes 1902,355): "Die Zweige [...] haben an der Spitze eine gespaltene stengelartige Fortsetzung mit kleinen Blättern, zwischen denen der steinige, runde weisse, einer kleinen Erbse gleiche Same sitzt."
