    This identification is based on the occurrences in the poetic texts (cf. BT, s.v. glēobēam) and the literal meining of this compound.

  • Comment on (B): -, Irish timpan, Irisches Saiteninstrument

    Based on L TYMPANUM dictionaries (cf. BT, CH, DOE, s.v.) give 'timbrel, Tamburin' as possible meaing, but this identification contradicts our meaning A. The psalter glosses probably result from the fact that TYMPANUM denotes a stringed instrument in Ireland and Scotland. Cf. Padelford 1899,37: "the word TYMPANUM, which was usually applied to the tambourine, came to mean a stringed Instrument in Ireland and in Scotland". Other psalter glosses indicate that OE glossators were not sure about the meaing of this word, e.g.: swieg: Ps(E) 80,3; hearpan: Ps(K) 80,3; on timpan[] ł o wifhearpan: Ps(C) 150,4; on hylsongæ: Ps(E) 150,4.
