    Identification based on the ModE name 'red sally' (cf. Britten / Holland 1886,314).

    Identification suggested by Pettit (2001, CXLVI, 841) with reference to Hunt (1989, 226); white and read osier species were especially distinguished in later medieval medical literature (cf. Richter 2003,352f; Britten 1881,70). Leonhard Fuchs 1543 counts three kinds of osier and for the red variety listes the L names SALIX NIGRA, PUNICA, VIMINALIS, SABINA and AMERINA (cf. Fuchs' ch. 126, and Marzell 2000,4,29).

    Pettit also suggests Salix x rubens Schrank; hybrid crack willow; Fahl-Weide as possible identification; this plant is a natural hybrid of Salix alba and Salix fragilis and has no red attributes.
