Cant. 5,13 GENAE ILLIUS SICUT AREOLAE AROMATUM where AREOLAE means "garden beds", ventures that sceabas, "sheaves", if not a mere guess, may be a corruption of seaþas, "cisterns" [s. Pheifer, A.30] [...] The word AROMATUM following AREOALE at Vulg. Cant. 5,13 is of note. BT under sceaf makes a separate entry of the meaning "a bundle of herbs" and in the documentations the herbs that make up such a bundle are all aromatic". Meritt especially refers to LB 57,10 (Leonhardi): "rudan, 7 dile, mintan 7 merce, syndrige sceafas" and 65,2: "rudan sceafas þry". The gloss looks like a guess by the glossator, therefore the following explanation could also be possible: In Cp A 723, like in D 57 (Trier; s.o.), we have AREOLI. AROMATUM ORTI and as third nearest gloss AREOLI sceabas; normally sceaf glosses FASCICULUS and MANIPULUS, so we should look for an explanation within the synonyms of these words. Here Gk DESME CHORTOU (δέσμη "bundle, Bündel", χόρτος "grass, hay; Gras, Heu"; L HORTUS) stands out, which is equated with MANIPULUS three times (CGL 2,268,38; 488,64; 3,261,47). Maybe the glossator identified AROMATUM (H)ORTI with DESME CHORTOU and glossed it because of the synonymous MANIPULUS with sceaf. His decision could have been influenced by DESME which because of OE disme is associated with AROMATUM; another explanation is attempted by Brown (1969,318).
