    LB: We have to assume that these occurrences denote A. sativa which is better documented for its medical purposes thant the pest weed A. fatua.

    Etymology: cf. Holthausen (1974, s.v. āte); Pokorny (1989,I,774).

    Some glosses indicate Avena fatua L.: e.g. LOLIUM, ate (WW 30/33). BT record s.v. āte: "Atan or lasor tares, ZIZANIA." LOLIUM and ZIZANIA denote oat-like field weeds.[1] Also cf. →ātih. OE āte has to be denoted with an Avena species, therefore those glosses probably mean A. fatua L., too. It is a common pest plant and occurrs on acres and grain fields, most likely amongst oats but also in wheat, vetch, and fleax fields. (Hegi 1906,I253: "in Äckern oder Getreidefeldern (vornehmlich unter dem Hafer, doch auch in Weizen-, Wicken- und Leinfeldern) als lästiges Unkraut")
