    The name refers to the read flowers of the plant (cf. Hegi 1906,V,2450). Pettit (2001,CXXVII,769) correctly doubts Chickering (1971,95), followed by Glosecki (1989,131), who for LA 172/22 suggest Urtica dioica L. as possible identification.

    For LB 7/22-23 (readan netelan anstelede) Deegan (1988,224f.) suggests Lamium maculatum L., spotted dead nettle; Gefleckte Taubnessel because →ān-steallet does not suit L. purpuraeum "which has one major stalk from which minor stalks branch. But Lanium maculatum L. or spotted dead-nettle, which also has pink flowers but which has leaves attached directly to the main stalk. Anstelede could be used to distinguish between the two [see Fitter/Blamey. pp.204-5]." L. maculatum was introduced (when?) to the British Isles and is generally considered a garden plant which can sometimes be found as an escape (Clapham 1962,754).
