Etymology:
Cf. Holthausen (1974, s.v.): "mapel-trēo n. 'Feldahorn', ne. maple, mnd. mapel-dorn, ais. mọpur-r (umgeb. nach mọsur-r 'Maser')" and "mapuldor mf. ds., as. mapulder, ahd. mazzoltra, nhd. Maßholder." Based on sound laws only NDS forms are related to OE mapuldor: OS mapulder 'maple, Ahorn', GML mapeldorn (with secondary -n, based on dorn or ahorn) (cf. Björkman 1901,212). Apparently related, or an English loan is OICEL mọpur-r 'sycamore maple, Bergahorn, Waldahorn' (cf. Falk / Torp 1910,I,716) which is remodeled into ON mọsur-r (cf. Kluge 2002, s.v. Maser), this again is related to GMC +masura- 'maple Ahorn' (cf. Falk / Torp 1910,I,716), which corresponds with OHG masar, MHG maser, NHG Maser 'gnarled outgrowth on maple or other trees, cup made from burl wood; knorriger Auswuchs an Ahorn u. a. Bäumen; Becher aus Maserholz (cf. Kluge 2002, s.v. Maser).
A more comprehensible approach is based on the popular HG name Maßholder, OHG mazzaltra, mazzoltra, MHG mazzalter, from GMC +matulđra, WGMC "matuldra, mit Baumnamensuffix zu germ. +matlu-, as. mat 'Speise'" (Kluge 2002, s.v. Maßholder). This form could have been transformed to WGMC +mapuldra following the model of WGMC +apuldra (OE →apuldor 'apple tree, Apfelbaum', OHG affoltra, apfoltra). One supporting fact is that +apuldra is the only tree name ending on -dra in the LG / anglo-friesian language area, which could have been model for +matuldra, while in the HG language area there are various tree names with the same suffix (e.g. Holunder, Wacholder), which helps to make the formation more transparent. Evidence for a close associative connection of →apuldor and mapuldor is, for example, the following occurrence (LB 27/10): genim [...] apuldor, mapuldor. A similar association of both tree names can be found in the LG names for Acer campestre, which in later times can also be found in HG areas: Aepeldäörn, Aepeldurn, Apelder, Apeldören (cf. Pritzel / Jessen 1967, 2).
