  • Comment on (A): Triticum L., wheat, Weizen

This identification does not cope with the variety of cereals in general or of wheat in particular: cf. Banham (1990,16ff.) for a detailed survey of this topic. Biggam (1998, 47-54) comments on ÆGram (B1.9.1), 34.4: emmer and spelt (glum wheat crop) were repalced by brad and club wheats (naked wheat crop) although this development differs in time and region; at time of Ælfred's Grammar (between 992 and 1002) naked wheats were most generally common type; græg then used to denote emmer and spelt (also supported by FAR). “However, the precise part of the glume wheats which was considered to be græg has still to be established. It is suggested that, where a part of the glume wheats can be shown to contrast, in terms of colour, with the same part of the plant in the naked wheats, that part could indicate the significance of græg in græg hwæte.” (1998,50).

  • Comment on (B): Tritici fructus, wheat corn, Saat-Weizenkorn

    Cf. Biggam (1998, 47-54), Banham (1990,16ff.).
