    It is not clear if this lemma really is a plant name. The identification[1] is based on HA LXXXVIII: Wiþ eagena sar 7 gesuel genim þysse wyrte wyrtwalan þe man CANIS CAPUT 7 on ure geþeode hun­des heafod hataþ (C I.192), and Hunger (1935,167): LXXXIX: CANIS CAPUT = A. orontium; also cf. Dur 92 and the respective note; equally Laud.

    The occurrences from glosses and from the HA most likely refer to plants whereas the occurrences in the LB seem to literally denote 'a dog's skull, Schädel eines Hundes'. These have in common that hundes hēafod has to be burned before use which is a characteristic treatment of bones used in medical recipes: cf. LB 11/18ff: heorotes hornes ahsan do on geswet win; 31/35ff: gebærne to sealfe wulfes ceacan þa winestran 7 þa teþ sundor; 40/14f: Wiþ liþwærce [...] wulfes heafodban bærn swiþe. Our assumption is also supported by the similarity of the appliances in LB 40/23f (hun­des hēafod) and 40/14f (wulfes hēafodbān): Wiþ liþseawe […], and Wiþ liþwærce […]. On this discussion also cf.     Etymology: if a plant name, it is a loan translation from L CANIS CAPUT.

Following Cockayne (1961,II,395 and BT (s.v.); but cf. Cockayne"s note on 7/11 (1961,II,21): "That the plant called houndshead in Hb. lxxxviii. is menat, I do not think."
