    The form grundsopa is still unclear.[1] L CARTILAGO can either denote 'animal cartilage' or with plants 'something in between soft and wooden matter' (cf. Klotz, s.v.). This is paralleled by ME grŏundsope (cf. MED, s.v. grŏund 15): "? the part of the wood which is soft and full of sap". On the meaning 'animal cartilage' cf. AhdGl 4,124, 43 CARTILAGO brustlofel (= 'sternum, Brustbein'); for similar glosses cf. MLW s.v. CARTILAGO.

    The DOE suggests: "the association of CORIZS ‘catarrh, mucous’ (see annotations to HlGl C382) with CARTILAGO may have led to the gloss grundsopa, the probable meaning of which is ‘dregs, lees’".
