Not recorded in BT(SC), CH(S); cf. NED (s.v. galingale): "The aromatic root of certain East Indian plants of the genera Alpinia and Kæmpferia." Pettit (2001,2,glossary) suggests Cyperus longus L., galingale, Gewöhnliches Hohes Zypergras (native) as alternative meaning, without further comment.

Etymology: Grattan / Singer (1951,111, n.2): "The word galingale (gallengar) like zedoary is of Arabic origin and occurs here for the first time in A.S."
