    Ad genus: Bt and ClH identify the plant name as f. because it occurs as nsg. clufþunge, and gsg. clufþungan, f. n-St. Cf. HA (Cockayne 1962,I,98): "þeos wyrt þe man sceleratam 7 oþrum naman clufþunge[1] nemneþ." Also cf. in HA CX: "Wiþ weartan genim [...] clufþungan wos" (Cockayne,I,224). In the LB there is a continuous record for nasg.; moreover the forms of the adequatly documented →þung 'poison, poisonous plant; Gift, Giftpflanze' demonstrate that it is m., a-decl. Cf. 46/14: se þung, 42/26: þone miclan þung, 81/10, 101/31: þunges. Was the compound clufþung a feminine, there had to be documented forms of nsg. clufþunge and asg. clufþungan because - as þung, m. a-decl. proves - it could only be a secondary feminin form and as such (and it additionally being a plant name) could only appear as n- or o-decl. As already demonstrated the analogical adjustment with OE plant names only tends towards f., n-declension. Besides, the asg. of an o-decl. had to be ∗clufþunge. We cannot find any record of the gsg. form listed by BT: "clufþung, e f."

    ARTENESIA MONOCLOS (for ARTEMISIA MONOCLONOS) has to be an erroneous gloss as it normally denotes an Artemisia species, cf. →mucg-wyrt.[2]

    BOTRACION normally denotes nontoxic Ranunculus species (cf. →cluf-wyrt).

    Etymology: The determiner cluf- is zero grade to the IE root ∗gleubh- 'cut, chop, carve, peel; schneiden, klieben, schnitzen, abschälen' (Pokorny 1989I,401f) and refers to the peculiarly lobed leaves. Also cf. Holthausen (1974, s.v. clufþung(e)); on the primary word -þung cf. Hoops (1889,83), who discusses the form in detail as part of his never realised dictionary of OE plant names.
