  • Comment on (A): ? Mercurialis perennis L., dog's mercury, Ausdauerndes Bingelkraut

Identification based on L MERCURIALIS. Cf. Hunger (1935,167) and Laud 984 and the respective note. For a detailed discussion cf. Lindheim's note (1941,n. 237); on the ME and ModE correspondents cf. the MED, s.v. cherlok, and the NED, s.vv. charlock, kedlock. The change of meaning from OE cedelc 'M. perennis' to (the obvious correspondent in) ME and ModE kedlock (OED), 'Sinapis arvensis' is not clear.

  • Comment on (B): ? Sinapis arvensis L., charlock, Acker-Senf

It is possible to assume an error in the glossing of MERCURIALIS, which might have happened in a pre-stage of the related glossaries, especially as the second gloss in Br,WW 297,30 →cerlic indicates that cedelc denoted Sinapis arvensis in Anglo-Saxon times. Also cf. →coydic. D'Aronco rejects this argument (1998,54).

In ClSt two glosses: M 386 MERCULIALIS cedelc; M 387: MERCULIARIS merce; merce seems to be an error based on L MERC.
