    According to Pokorny (1959,13f.) and Holthausen (1974, s.v.) the etymological root is not * aig- 'oac', 'Eiche' but * aig- 'swinging (violently)', '(sich) heftig bewegen, schwingen'. Still, secondary motivation in OE might have been ac. Cf. Kluge (2002, s.v. 'Eichhörnchen'), who connects the word to Germ. * aik- 'oak', 'Eiche'. The Duden dictionary of etymology refers to Pokorny and Holthausen.
